Senior Project Officer, Consulting

About the Role

The Senior Project Officer will work closely with the Executive Manager to develop and deliver consulting services in areas such as policy development, research, evaluation, training and strategic planning. This role is integral to expanding the reach and impact of the Lowitja Institute, ensuring our work aligns with the principles of beneficence, leadership, workforce development, stakeholder engagement and measurable impact.

Key Responsibilities:

  • lead and coordinate consulting projects, including research, evaluation, policy review, organisational planning and training
  • manage projects effectively, ensuring clear documentation and adherence to Lowitja Institute’s templates, systems and practices
  • conduct high-quality analysis and strategy development to inform project outcomes
  • prepare professional reports, project proposals and other documents for clients and stakeholders
  • represent Lowitja Institute in various settings, contributing to national discussions on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing
  • build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders across sectors to support future projects and funding opportunities
  • foster collaboration across Lowitja Institute teams, ensuring knowledge translation and impact-driven outcomes
  • support the development and implementation of the Lowitja Institute Business Plan.

Essential Skills and Attributes

  1. Strong knowledge and communication: understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing and the ability to engage effectively with communities.
  2. Expertise in policy, research and project management: significant experience in at least two of these areas, with a strong grasp of national and jurisdictional policy cycles, impact and evaluation.
  3. Leadership and collaboration: proven ability to lead, supervise and collaborate with diverse personnel while working both independently and as part of a team.
  4. High level analytical and communication skills: strong conceptual, analytical and negotiation skills, alongside a track record of high quality written and oral communication.
  5. Representation and stakeholder engagement: experience representing an organisation in key forums and building stakeholder relationships to secure funding or future projects.
  6. Strong organisational skills: demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines under pressure.
  7. Commitment to cultural safety: deep understanding of cultural safety in an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander context and the ability to contribute to a culturally safe workplace.
  8. The ability to undertake interstate travel and work out of hours.
  9. Working with Children / Vulnerable Peoples Check (or state/territory equivalent).

Highly Desirable

  1. Relevant post graduate qualifications.
  2. Experience working in a research or policy organisation.
